Description
Bach’s Cantata No. 1, “Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern,” is one of his earliest surviving cantatas. Composed around 1725, it is also known as the Wedding Cantata. This cantata is written for soprano, tenor, and bass soloists, along with a four-part choir and a Baroque instrumental ensemble. It is a festive and celebratory piece that was intended for weddings, but it is also suitable for other joyful occasions. The work consists of a series of arias and recitatives, all based on the hymn “Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern,” which is used as a theme throughout the cantata. Bach’s Cantata No. 1 is a beautiful example of his mastery of vocal and instrumental composition.
